When I started learning piano, I really tried to learn to read music.
I took a semester of piano classes, three hours a week. I bought books and flashcards. I downloaded apps. I learned the usual mnemonics. I even put note stickers on my keyboard, which I definitely don't recommend.
I could learn pieces and I understood the theory. But when I looked at unfamiliar sheet music, I still had to stop and figure out the notes one at a time.
What I wanted was simpler. I wanted to look at a note on the staff and know where it was on the piano, and to press a key and be able to picture where that note lived on the staff.
So I set out to build the tool I couldn't find, one that lets me practice that connection over and over with immediate feedback.
And something started to change. The notes began to live in my head.
I'm not a professional pianist, and I don't instantly sight-read everything I see. But I can now picture much more of the keyboard and staff in my mind. When I see a note, I can find it. When I sit down with unfamiliar music, I can begin reading instead of first having to decode every note.
At the beginning of my Level 2 piano class, we were given unfamiliar music and ten minutes to start working through it. At the end of the previous semester, I would have needed to look up the notes or use another tool before I could really begin. This time, I could just start.
That little practice tool became NoteFluency.
Most piano resources can teach you what the notes are. NoteFluency gives you a place to practice the connection repeatedly until finding them becomes easier.
The free version lets you experience the practice loop with three notes across the grand staff.
NoteFluency isn't a full piano course, and it doesn't replace a teacher. It's a focused practice tool for one specific skill, connecting the note you see with the key you play.
